Shame on you! Kasper Schmeichel takes aim at “news” sites over fake Euro 2020 quote

Kasper Schmeichel takes aim at “news” sites over fake Euro 2020 quote

Leicester City and Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has taken to twitter to call out “news” sites that published a false quote about his reaction to the Euro 2020 final.

According to the sites, the ‘keeper was alleged to have said:

“I didn’t care Italy won, but I didn’t want England to win due to the bad refereeing during our semi-final. My heart still bleeds because I personally witnessed Sterling diving. It was a clear dive.”

However, the Danish shot-stopper has since taken to the social media platform to correct matters, saying:

Not sure where this “quote” has come from over the past few days.

    It’s total rubbish.

I never said that and shame on these ‘news’ sites for posting it with no source.

Second “fake news” in a week

This has not been a good week for British media, with Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk earlier calling out the Mirror’s Chief football writer Simon Mullock over fake allegations.

Mullock reported that Van Dijk was “leading Netherlands’ stars in revolt” against a possible return to Oranje management for Louis van Gaal. According to Mullock:

It is understood that Van Dijk, vice-captain Gini Wijnaldum and a number of other rebel players wanted former Chelsea assistant coach Henk ten Cate to take over.

However, the Dutchman hit back, writing that:

This story is completely false. It’s never been more important for journalists to tell the truth and not just make stuff up. Shame on you Mr Mullock.

With fake news rife across social media and media sites, it has never been more important to source check and take everything read with a pinch of salt.
