France humbled by Mexico in Olympic games opener

    Worst possible start

France began their Olympic campaign with a crushing defeat, losing 4-1 to a free-flowing Mexico side in Tokyo. After a goalless first half, which the South Americans just edged, Mexico netted two quick goals in quick succession after halftime.

Alexis Vega opened the scoring with a bullet header after some brilliant work from David Lainez, before Sebastian Cordoba pounced on a French mistake when trying to play the ball out from the back, rifling the ball home.

France pulled one back from the penalty spot when Randal Kolo Muani was unceremoniously brought down in the Mexico area, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation as goals from Uriel Antona and Eduardo Aguirre ensured that Mexico took all three points from the group A opener.

Meanwhile, France will be looking to bounce back with results against hosts Japan, and South Africa, as they look to make the latter stages of the tournament, with the aforementioned pair meeting later today.

    France’s horrible footballing summer

Olympic disappointment would cap a horrible few months for the National side. Les Blues crashed out of Euro 2020 on penalties to underdogs Switzerland in the round of 16 stage, despite being favourites ahead of the tournament.

The France under-21 side, also favourites for the U-21 European Championships, went one better, exiting the competition at the quarter-final stage despite possessing a seemingly incredible side.

Were the French Olympic side also to exit the competition early, serious questions would have to be asked of the management of Les Blues, although with the talent across their ranks, they will surely remain a huge threat for years to come.

Elsewhere, Dani Ceballos hit the post but Spain were held to a 0-0 draw with Egypt, while New Zealand emerged as 1-0 victors over South Korea and the Ivory Coast defeated Saudi Arabia 2-1.
